Public Speaking Skills for Academics

My birthday is this week and it’s hard for me to believe that I started delivering public speaking program for academics (engineering, biotechnology, and medicine) in 1992 — over 20 years ago! When I first started all of the faculty and even the students were older than me, now, as much as it pains me to admit this, I am older than the postdocs and even sometimes even older than the faculty!

As you may know, I live in the Philadelphia area and one of my best public speaking clients is local to me—the University of Pennsylvania.  U Penn Engineering was my second paying client, just over 20 years!  My late husband was a PhD student there and it was his encouragement that got me started.

Just about every year at U Penn I deliver a few different communication skills programs for both the faculty and post-docs in the medical school. Two weeks ago, the topic was effective presentations for physicians and researchers. We talked about effective delivery for influence, creating powerful slide presentations and optimal slide organization strategies. Then I went back again last week and we talked about overcoming speaker nervousness, how to run a Q&A session and overcoming presentation disasters.

Next month I’ll be delivering a program on I’ll deliver on slide design for science and in the Spring a program focused on networking skills.

I’d love to deliver a program for your company. My most general popular program is called “Influence to Maximize Impact” let me know if you’d like for me to come to your organization.
